Antti Pussinen & Martta-Kaisa Virta: Lääkekaupunki / Medicine City

Pictures of installation

2009, empty medicine packs, plywood, lights, 3x3x3m

Cities are medicine against human fear and loneliness. Lit buildings offer safety from the darkness nature and man. The knowledge that there are people around you, even if unseen, makes you feel at home. Should you desire you can lose yourself in the crowd or swim on the surface, as visible as possible. Those fleeing their own difference will find people like them, but will also have to bear the difference of other. Hidden under the social nature of the city are lonely inhabitants, in piles and rows, in houses after another. People don't greet their neighbours and things shared means the same as belonging to no-one. The remedies for inflamed communality are often electronic. The nearest people are light on the screens of television sets and computers. The inability of people to encounter themselves and other easily leads to overdoses of medication and unexpected joint effects.

Seitsemän urbaania hiljaisuutta / Seven Urban Silences

Pictures of installation

2008, Plywood, stickers, spary paint, monome interface, computer, headphones, 100x50x37cm

Silence is pretty much a non-existent treat in tightly packed urban surroundings and even in this silence one can hear the echo of receding sirens and city sounds. 7 Urban Silences provides the spectator with a chance to experiment with the relative silences of a urban setting by mixing together soundscapes from different cities to create a global urban silence for themselves.
Various artists and musicians have recorded the silences of seven different cities, bringing these together in the installation. Cities and artists are:

Kaija Papu: Dakar, Senegal
Cedric Anglaret: Paris, France
Jari haanperä: Copenhagen, Denmark
Mikko Seppälä: Helsinki, Finland
Eric Van Hove: Bejing, China
Lin Culbertson: New York, U.S.A.
Melanie Chilianis, Melbourne, Australia

Ei saa / Not Allowed

Pictures of installation

2007, Cast resin, clay, acrylic, steel, plywood, lamp, 160x70x45cm

Finnish society is based on asking permission and possibly getting one if done by the book. Obedience has its benefits when everybody goes by the rules decided together, but it also creates an illusion that control is not questionable.

Laatat / Plates

2003 -, Ceramic tiles, Spray paint, Acrylic

For a few years now i've done most of my painting on ceramic tiles. Sprayed stencils on ceramic structure builds a material conflict within the paintings and picture world takes its material from movies and photography.
